5 Ways to Massively Reduce Your Child’s Exposure to Microplastics

August 22, 2025

As parents, we do everything to keep our kids healthy, but tiny threats like microplastics can slip into their daily lives through food, water, and clothing. These small plastic particles are linked to health concerns like obesity, hormonal imbalances, behavioural and cognitive issues and more. At The Squeaky B’s, we’re passionate about making low-tox living simple and fun. Here are five easy ways to reduce your child’s exposure to microplastics in 2025, keeping their world as wholesome as the lunches you pack.

1. Filter Their Drinking Water

Tap water can contain microplastics from environmental pollution, with a 2025 CDC report noting their presence in 80% of tested water sources. Use a high-quality water filter, like a countertop or pitcher model, to remove microplastics and ensure clean, safe drinking water for your kids’ meals and hydration. The counter top  H2O Australia hydrogen filter machine is one of our tried and tested for drinking water and Well Verti shower filter is our top rated for a clean, low tox showers and baths for your kiddos.

2. Avoid Ultra-Processed Packaged Foods

Ultra-processed foods often come in plastic packaging that sheds microplastics, especially during storage or heating. But that’s not all, the process in which many of these foods are created using machinery increases the chances of microplastics being in the actual food itself. Another great reason to focus on fresh, whole foods to avoid these in our kids diet.

3. Swap Plastic Lunchboxes and Dinnerware for Stainless Steel

Plastic lunchboxes and dinnerware can release microplastics into food, particularly when scratched or heated. Swap any food storage to stainless steel or glass especially water bottles and lunchboxes where food and water could be sitting for hours at uncontrolled temps.  Here’s our best rated stainless steel lunchbox

4. Cook Their Food with Cast Iron or Stainless Steel

Non-stick cookware can release microplastics and harmful chemicals like PFAS when heated, per a 2024 EPA report. Use cast iron or stainless steel pans for cooking. They’re durable, non-toxic, and perfect for preparing healthy, safe meals for your kids

5. Swap Synthetic Clothes for Natural Fibers Like Cotton and Linen

Synthetic fabrics like polyester shed microplastics during washing, which can end up on skin or in the air. A 2025 Environmental Research study found microplastics in 90% of tested clothing. Choose cotton or linen clothes for your kids to reduce exposure and keep them comfy.
